100% Renewable Energy by 2015

At the recent World Congress on Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change organised in Bonn, Germany from the 3-5 June 2011, a colleague and I presented a poster on the experiences of Frederikshavn Municipality in Denmark where the aim is to achieve 100% renewable energy in electricity, district heating and transport by 2015. The sources of renewable energy encompass biomass for heat and electricity and biofuels for transport. This is a truly impressive goal, but there are many challenges, particularly in relation to meeting all principles of sustainability and engaging the public in the transition.
