Biomassacre in Australia?

I was recently told about a report entitled "Biomassacre: How logging Australia's native forests for bioenergy harms the climate, wildlife and people". It has been produced by Markets for Change that claim to identify companies and products driving environmental destruction. This report is an incredible attack on bioenergy in Australia. It is fair to say that the use of native forests for any purpose is at the heart of the debate as well as the deep mistrust of the forestry industry by environmental groups in Australia. It is really unfortunate that the debate on bioenergy is so polarised and that key environmental groups have decided to group all bioenergy systems and applications together, rather than isolating criticisms to particular processes or feedstocks. There are many examples of bioenergy systems with very positive impacts for climate change, biodiversity, communities and business. By taking this approach, Markets for Change undermine all renewable energy, as bioenergy is the major renewable energy globally and in Australia, and bioenergy will grow considerably in the decades to come. A far better approach would be for Markets for Change to partner with Australia's bioenergy organisations (and those internationally) and develop, apply and monitor key sustainability standards. All renewable energy will be needed to phase out fossil fuels.
