The Bioeconomy: An Introduction to the World of Bioenergy

Bioenergy is booming around the world and with the expansion comes exciting opportunities and some disturbing risks. Learning about bioenergy – from technologies, to resources, to policies – is important to the success and sustainability of the bioeconomy. This short guide opens the door to understanding and engaging in the transition from the fossil-based economy to a bio-based economy. Get a free copy of this guide on the bioeconomy!

Call for Papers: Sustainable Bioeconomy (Book publication).

Edited by Walter Leal Filho (HAW Univ) and Ismar Borges Lima (SCU/UERR-Recinatur).
Expressions of interest, consisting initially of a 300 words abstract, should be sent to the editors at info@iccip.net. The deadline for abstracts/papers is the 15th January 2016. Full papers are due by 20th February 2016 so that the book may be released in the summer of 2016.

The world has been witnessing increased competition for the limited natural resources we have available. The ever-increasing population - especially in developing countries - needs a safe and secure food supply, a fact which puts increased pressure in areas as varied as agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, among others.
There is therefore a pressing need for optimising and maximising the use of biological resources, so that primary production and processing systems can produce more food, fiber and other bio-based products with less environmental impacts and lower greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, we need a "Sustainable Bioeconomy". The term "Sustainable Bioeconomy" encompasses the sustainable production of renewable resources from land, fisheries and aquaculture environments and their conversion into food, feed, fiber bio-based products and bio-energy as well as the related public goods.

Despite the relevance of sustainable bioeconomy, there is a paucity of publications in this field. This book therefore addresses a perceived need for a publication, which encompasses examples of research, studies, projects and practical initiatives, which illustrate how biological resources and ecosystems could be used in a more sustainable, efficient and integrated manner. In other word, how the principles of sustainable bioeconomy may be implemented into practice.
The editors are thus calling for expressions of interests from scientists and/or representatives from industry working in the field of sustainable bioeconomy. Papers should be on innovative, cross-cutting and practice-based experiences, especially those which may be replicable elsewhere.

With its cross-cutting nature, the field of Sustainable Bioeconomy offers a unique opportunity to address complex and inter-connected challenges, while achieving economic growth. It can assist countries and societies to make a transition and to use resources more efficiently, and shows how to rely less on biological resources to satisfy industry demand and the needs from consumers.
